Tomato and Onion Chutney

Ingredients (for the chutney)

2 tomatoes, chopped fine

1 onion, chopped fine

1tbsp tamarind chutney

1tbsp vegetable oil

1 fresh red chili, deseeded and chopped fine

1tsp split urad dal

a pinch of hing

salt, to taste

Ingredients (for the tempering)

1tbsp vegetable oil

1 fresh red chili, deseeded and chopped fine

1tsp split urad dal

1tsp cumin seeds

1tsp mustard seeds

a handful of curry leaves

Method

The below are the steps for the tempering.

To a pan, add the oil.

Then, add the mustard seeds.

Next, add the cumin seeds.

Add the red chilies.

Saute for a minute.

Then, add the curry leaves and take it off the heat.

The below are the steps for the chutney.

To another pan, add the oil.

Then, add the split urad dal.

Next, add the red chilies.

Add the onions.

Saute for a couple of minutes and add the hing.

Then, add the salt.

Mix it in and add the tomatoes.

Cook the tomatoes till the water completely evaporates from them and take it off the heat.

Finally, add the imli chutney and give it a mix.

Transfer the mixture to a blender.

Blend it to a smooth consistency.

Remove the mixture into a bowl.

Top with the tempering mixture on top.

Serve with idli or dosa.
