What is Whole Wheat Bread?

Whole wheat bread, which is more commonly known as brown bread is made with a significant amount of whole grain flour.

Whole wheat bread has a interesting history. In the 1700’s and 1800’s, brown bread was mostly consumed by the poor, since brown meal was considered as a less desirable grain product. Hence, due to its lower pricing, it could be afforded by the common man.

However, this all changed during the later half of the nineteenth century, where the health benefits of whole wheat bread were discovered and and the price increased to a point which was often greater than that of fine flour.

Our recipe for whole wheat bread has a little bit of the plain white flour in as well. The gluten in the plain white flour helps to bind the bread better. If you want to omit out the white flour, simply substitute it with the same amount of whole wheat flour.
